You Are More Than Your Past Design:
The design for this is a powerful reminder of two things:
First, there are 2.3 million people incarcerated in the United States. We hold 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prison population.
Secondly, this design is a reminder to those returning citizens and those with a criminal past that they are more than their past, that tomorrow doesn't have to be a repeat of yesterday and all things can be made new.
Whether you've been to prison or not, it's easy to be defined by our past mistakes, regrets, heartbreaks and decisions. This design is a powerful reminder that there is hope for the future no matter how dark the past. It is an acknowledgement of the destruction we have caused, but also the release of all hope we had for a better past and a step towards forgiveness, restoration and renewal.
This design features a man who is half human and half skeleton. The skeleton side symbolizes our past, the part of us that has brought death. The parts of our hearts and minds that we are ashamed of. Our criminal history, our regrets, our mistakes. The choices we've made that have caused others and ourselves harm and destruction. But we are learning over time to believe that we are "more than the worst thing we've ever done." We are starting to believe that we can come back to life where we've been dead and new life and hope can spring forth. That resurrection is still possible to those who have thought all was lost. You are not your past and you my friend are more than the worst thing you've ever done.
“Forgiveness is for anyone who needs a safe passage through your mind”
Even if it's you.
